5 of the Most Popular forms of Cannabis Concentrates

As cannabis continues to push through the political and social thresholds once upheld, consumers are becoming more enamored with the plant’s appeal. Along with vaping, concentrates have become more mainstream than it was 20 years ago. Moreover, consumers don’t initially understand the different terminology often associated with concentrates.  Here are some of the most popular forms of concentrates:

Wax

Here is a rule of thumb: most of the terms mentioned above are forms of cannabis concentrates revolve around their aesthetic and consistency.  Let's start with wax. This form of cannabis concentrate, sometimes referred to as 'sap,' is a soft, nonreflective, and crumbly concentrate. Wax often has properties similar to that of concentrated cookie crumbs. Although it looks dry and non-translucent, giving it an 'earwax' appearance, this form of cannabis concentrate has a loose consistency. Cannabis consumers in possession of great wax sometimes encounter high-end names such as 'budder' or 'sap.'

Shatter

Shatter is a firm, reflective cannabis concentrate that has physical properties similar to that of broken glass or hard candy. This is where it gets its moniker of being 'shatter.' Cannabis concentrates with this type of consistency are often the byproduct of hydrocarbon extraction, such as Butane Hash Oil (or BHO.)  Shatter forms when the raw extract is placed onto a thin, flat slab while remaining unphased during the extraction process. Shatter products are often held in high regard for being a manageable concentrate. However, shatter is known to become loose gooey when exposed to undesirable temperatures like excessive heat. Ideally, if stored in cooler temperatures, the 'pull-and-snap' consistency will possess the shatter properties cannabis consumers have come to know and love.

Crumble

Runny oils with excess moisture tend to create gooey waxes, sometimes called 'budder.' Conversely, the harder forms of cannabis concentrates are likely to form a soft, brittle texture known as 'crumble' or 'honeycomb' The word "wax" can be used to describe all of these softer, solid textures.

Rosin

The term rosin refers to a particular extraction process that employs a combination of heat along with pressure to instantly force the sap or resin out of the bud. Moreover, the term "rosin" originated as a method of making a product used to create friction with violin bows. With cannabis, this method is incredibly versatile in that it can either be used with flowers or to help clean up hash and kief into full-melt hash oil. The result is often a pellucid, viscous, and can even resemble shatter. If performed properly, rosin can be reminiscent of the flavor, yield, and even potency of other extraction products that utilize solvents.

Live Resin

Live resin is a form of cannabis Concentrates that are prepared to utilize a technique that uses recently gathered cannabis and freezes it to extremely cool temperatures before and during the extraction process. Considering Cannabis Concentrates, Live resin is fairly new to the concentrate game. Its origins are often noted at some point between 2011 to 2013 with a handful of extractors as well as growers. In this group was a man called William Fenger, (a.k.a 'Kind Bill,') and a gentleman referred to as 'Giddy Up'  were the two originators largely responsible with introducing Live Resin to the cannabis concentrate wave.

Moreover, this was done by creating a specialized BHO (or Butane Hash Oil)  extractor with the ability of maintaining the incredibly low temperatures necessary to produce Live Resin Cannabis Concentrates. Add a dash of ingenuity fused that with their mission of utilizing ultra-chilled even frozen plant material for the cannabis concentrate. By using freshly frozen cannabis, the trichomes would be easily extractable into the concentrate. In unison, Giddy Up and Kind Bill were able to create methods able to extract cannabis Concentrates heavily loaded with extremely high levels of terpenes and trichomes, making it quite the new contender among the heavy-hitting Cannabis Concentrates.
