Oil, Extracts, & Concentrates: What's the Difference?

Cannabinoids and other useful complex compounds are a natural part of the cannabis plant. They are the reason why one cannabis product may cause relief from pain while the other produces psychoactive effects. Experts on the matter know to head right for the small, sparkling hair-like trichomes to find the most desirable cannabis compounds. The frosty trichomes give the entire plant a hairy coat, including its flower buds. They are the sites for the various cannabinoids, such as THC and CBD (Insert Link of Other Article Here). They also contain the terpenes that bestow the aroma and physical effects unique to different cultivars and strains of the cannabis plant.

With us so far? Then we can move on to the differences between the various types of cannabis products, i.e., oils, extracts, and concentrates.

What are Concentrates?

Any product created solely from the chemicals within the cannabis trichomes – and sometimes a solvent -- will be known as a concentrate. As its name would suggest, they are created to distill a certain quality, such as the aroma, flavor, etc. Since concentrates won’t have any of the undesired parts, they come out more potent. Thus, they will act more quickly and can usually make the user high in less time/amounts. But individual tolerances will always matter.

You may choose between the various types of cannabis concentrates, depending on how you want to ingest it. For instance, tinctures are ideal for oral ingestion. They are made when a liquid receives an infusion of cannabis. They also work within 20-30 of consuming them. Vaporizer cartridges, on the other hand, are full of cannabis oil. You may smoke one by inserting it into a vaporizer or e-cigarette. Then there is the Pot Wax Pen, which works just like the dry herb vape ones. Instead of vaporizing dry herbs, these pens can vaporize concentrates instead.

Other types of cannabis concentrate popular among users include:

  • Shatter has glass-like consistency, which is why it is easier to handle while smoking.

  • Just like shatter, the wax is also a sticky concentrate. Usually, it is sold in small glass jars or silicone containers. Due to its sap-like consistency, the wax is difficult to handle.

  • Crumble is much like its own, which is why it is easy to handle with your hands. However, it can collect moisture when stored in parchment paper. Like wax, silicone or glass jars are well-suited to store crumble.

  • Extraction of rosins doesn’t require any solvents. It makes them a unique type of cannabis concentrate. Instead of using solvents, dried cannabis buds are squeezed in the presence of pressure and heat. It faces the least amount of processing; hence, it is highly pure.

  • Budder concentrate, like wax, is a form of butane hash oil. But it has an opaque appearance and taffy-like consistency. Most cannabis enthusiasts prefer budder for its higher terpene profile and tasty smoke.

  • Oils are also cannabis concentrates but we will come back to them later.

What are Extracts?

You’ll find many products under the umbrella category of cannabis extracts, including those of hemp and marijuana. In hemp extract, the levels of CBD will be higher while marijuana extracts will have more THC. Usually, they are replete with high cannabinoid levels, such as CBD and THC. In fact, they are more concentrated than dry cannabis stems, flowers, or leaves. You can vape with less frequency because of the high cannabis content.

After extracting the cannabis oil, manufacturers can process it to produce budder, shatter, Wax Concentrate Cartridge, sap, vape liquid, and Cartridge Pen Dab. Thus, they are ideal for use in various ways of ingestion, such as in vaping, creating edibles, and increasing the potency of cannabis flower in joints and pipes.

What are Oils?

Oils are just one type of cannabis concentrates. Just as with cannabis concentrates, you will have many choices in case of oils. Although, you may want to consult your local cannabis laws to see which ones you may use legally.

Normally, you will find these products in the cannabis market:

  • For medicinal purposes, you can use CBD oil, which is a non-intoxicating product. It is effective against a variety of medical conditions. CBD oil is commonly sold in the form of tinctures or as capsules.

  • Any product that is labeled THC oil will likely have an intoxicating effect. However, this does not limit its potential in medicinal usage. Oils with THC infusions are usually in the form of solids. Users vaporize Dab Oil Concentrate), but they are also available as tinctures and capsules.

  • Vaporizer cartridges are like e-cigarettes but with cannabis. They are popular since they are portable and allow the user to control the dosage.

  • Capsular products that are also ingestible are activated oils that you may consume directly or sprinkle into your food or drinks.
